Learning German Advice and Help

Learning German

Use Your Native Language to Learn a Second
As German and English are both Germanic languages with large influences coming from Latin and Greek, a lot of similar words appear in their vocabularies.

  • der Garten - garden
  • das Haus - house
  • schwimmen - swim
  • singen - sing
  • braun - brown
  • ist - is

Having said that you will also have to watch out for words that appear to be something they're not. The German word ‘bald’ (soon) has nothing to do with hair!

Language interference
When you begin learning a second language, the natural tendency is for your brain to fall back into your native language, resulting in an incoherent mixture of the two. This can often slow down the learning process, whilst you separate the two different languages in your mind. However, as mentioned in the paragraph above, the link between German and English turns this interference into an advantage, meaning you can often use English vocabulary as a root to learning German.

Nouns and Their Genders: Der / Die / Das
Most languages, other than English, are dependant on gender. German is one of these gender languages and our German teachers encourage students to learn each noun with its appropriate gender (not separately) when practising new vocabulary. As an example: ‘das Haus’ instead of just ‘Haus’ (meaning house/building). This can make the crucial difference between being understood by German speakers or not and forms a strong basis for learning the German language.

Stop translating!
As your vocabulary grows our aim is to get you thinking in German. Like when you use your native language it is best to avoid translation. Our German tutors will help you to stop thinking in English and try and do things the ‘native way,’ remembering that German speakers don’t have to translate when they communicate.

Be Patient
Learning a new language takes time! So don’t be discouraged if you get off to a slow start. The more you expose yourself to German the more likely you are to recognise the language, key vocabulary and phrases. Try to surround yourself with German reference, such as books, films, music etc. and refer to them regularly. Perhaps watching a German film with English subtitles to familiarise yourself with pronunciation and accents. As mentioned you will find that German is relatively quick to pick up, being an English speaker, as the transition is not so steep when compared with other exclusive languages. Our German tutors will be there every step of the way, providing encouragement and confidence in your ability and our satisfied customers are testament to the progress you will make.
