German Prepositions

Prepositions are words which link two related parts of a sentence. They are placed in front of nouns in order to indicate a relationship between that noun and the verb, adjective, or noun that precedes it.

Most German prepositions take the dative:
e.g. aus, bei, gegenüber, mit, nach, seit, von , zu
Some prepositions always take the accusative:
e.g. für, um, durch, gegen, ohne

Others take either the accusative or the dative dependant upon whether or not movement from one place to another is involved. If movement is involved then use the accusative, however, if the action occurs in one place then use the dative.
e.g. an, auf, hinter, in, neben, unter, über, vor, zwischenExample:

Die Post ist neben der Bank, aber vor dem Restaurant.

Bevor du auf die Post gehst, geh schnell in den Supermarkt der in der Nähe von dem Metzger ist und geh nicht ohne den Brief los!
